The most-travelled sailing school boat is back

Neil Payter returns to Haslar Marina

Welcome back Neil!

Haslar character and well-known sailing instructor Neil Payter returned to the marina following a double crossing of the Atlantic. He completed a punishing OSTAR single-handed transatlantic race in a creditable 35 days, enjoyed some R&R in America, then turned the boat around and sailed back to Blighty.

The 2017 OSTAR was one of the roughest on record, with only 7 boats of the 21 starters actually managing to make it to Newport Rhode Island from the start in Plymouth due to severe weather. Neil battled huge seas and storm force winds as well as equipment failure to become the only Brit to complete the event, finsihing second in the single-handed Jester class.

Neil sailed his trusty 36-year-old Yamaha 33 'Solent 1', just proving the old adage that the best boat for the race is the one you have. Solent 1 was a training boat for many years, and Neil always says that she has probably been host to more Yachtmaster exams than any other boat in the world.
