Jess breezes the Fastnet
Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Rolex Fastnet Race
Our East Cowes Assistant Manager Jess competed in the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Rolex Fastnet Race. As part of the crew of 8 aboard Machismo, Sigma 38, they finished 24 out of 62 in their class. We got the inside track from Jess on her Fastnet experience where wind direction as much as strength defined the race.
Jess said, “East Cowes Marina was really busy in the build up and it was great to know that amongst the starting fleet of 388 yachts there were East Cowes berth holders racing with us. It was exciting to see all the big boats at the start of the race. T It was quite a nice gentle spinnaker reach out of the Solent with the wind building once we got past the Scillys with gusts up to 33 knots over the Celtic Sea.”
For many the Fastnet is the pinnacle of their sailing careers and for Jess having done just two night sails before she found sailing in the dark really cool. She said, “Although I didn’t actually get to see the famous Rock, when we made into Plymouth it was brilliant to see so many visitors to East Cowes in the Race Village.
So, will Jess be competing again? We think she could be persuaded.
