HMS Illustrious Memorial
On a stormy night, 17 October 1948, 29 young men lost their lives when returning to their aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, from a night out in Weymouth when their liberty boat capsized in Portland Harbour.
Portland Marina is proud to be the home of a stunning Portland Stone carved memorial stone. The ceremony on October 17th 2010 unveiled the memorial in the presence of naval top brass, survivors and crew mates, and relatives of the crewmen lost in the disaster.
The short video below was taken by local historian Stuart Morris and can be purchased as a special commemorative 50 minute DVD.
