Did you know there used to be a vehicle chain ferry running across the harbour? Now there’s a good idea!

Interesting Fact...

Records show that there has been a ferry service of sorts between Gosport and Portsmouth since 1602. This was safer than the journey round to Portsmouth by land, because lurking along the almost non-existent roads over marshland were pirates and highwaymen ready to cut the throats of unwary travellers.

Interesting Fact...

Gosport used to have a railway system designed to take Queen Victoria directly to a pier that used to exist at Lee-on-Solent, this to ease her journey to Osbourne House on the Island. All taken away now, leaving Gosport as the largest town in Britain with no railway station. Brilliant.

How to find us

By car

From junction 11 of the M27, follow the road to Fareham. At the first roundabout turn left into Gosport under the viaduct; straight over the next roundabout, then fork left (signposted A32 Gosport) and continue for two miles.
At Fort Brockhurst turn right on the second of a pair of roundabouts (signposted Haslar Marina) and this will lead you past HMS Sultan with its two brick forts.

Turn left at the next roundabout (Public House “The Cocked Hat”) and after a mile there is a small one-way system. Follow the roadround to the right and then turn immediately left into South Street (signposted Town Centre). Turn right at the “George and Dragon” Public House into Haslar Road. The marina car park is on the right hand side.

By rail

The nearest train station is Portsmouth Harbour. To get to Haslar Marina from the station catch the Gosport Ferry, which departs every 15 minutes. On arriving in Gosport the marina is just to the left of the ferry pontoon.

From Cowes take the Chain Ferry at the end of Medina Road, follow the one-way system around East Cowes town until you almost get back to the chain ferry. Then turn left into Clarence Road as above.
