The first of Dean and Reddyhoff’s marinas, this scheme was started in September of 1992 and by May of the following year
well over 100 berths had been created, starting off with floating offices and toilets in second hand Portakabins mounted on old Southampton Boat Show floats. Initial dredging was done with a dragline, running the material under the Haslar Bridge in six wheel drive dumpers at low tides, placing it
ashore to form what is now the car park.
The following year the rest of the dredging was completed by barge (350,000 cubic metres in all), and the main frame of the wavescreen was installed. At the same time the lightship was being purchased to complete the wave protection, and was then converted in Poole, this to include a clubhouse and showers and toilets (see lightship page). Meanwhile more second hand Portakabins were congregating ashore to accommodate the new chandlery, boat sales and workshops, this being the start of the thriving business community that is there now.

Over subsequent years, the Portakabins were replaced by permanent buildings designed in a colourful ‘New England’ style, and the car park areas were surfaced and landscaped, with lighting, cameras, barriers, all the usual stuff! The deck was fitted to the wavescreen to form part of the Milennium Walkway, and
has been popular with locals ever since. A last job was to hook our own management team out of their very temporary offices, and install them in the new building at the head of the pontoons to keep a caring/ watchful eye over the berths.
