Developing ‘greener’ marinas

Find out what Dean & Reddyhoff is doing to make sure its marinas are as environmentally friendly as possible...

Recycling

In 2008 Dean & Reddyhoff launched an innovative new recycling scheme at Haslar Marina. All of the following can now be recycled at the marina:

  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Cans
  • Glass
  • All types of plastic packaging
  • Tetra Paks
  • Foil
  • Telephone directories

The real advantage of the scheme is that berth holder can collect all recyclable materials together in a single container – much more manageable when on board. These can be deposited in any of the recycling bins around the marina and will be separated later at the reprocessing plant.

Since this scheme was introduced in July 2008, the amount of waste being sent to landfill from Haslar Marina has been reduced by a massive 50 percent.

In 2009 identical recycling facilities will be made available at Weymouth and Portland Marinas, while East Cowes Marina will also introduce a full recycling service through the Isle of Wight’s new Resource Recovery Facility.

Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas worked in partnership with The Green Blue - the RYA and British Marine Federation’s environmental awareness initiative - to implement this new scheme. At the 2008 Southampton Boat Show the company was awarded The Green Blue’s first ever ‘Award for Environmental Improvement’ in recognition of its efforts.

Sustainable design

Dean & Reddyhoff’s new flagship development at Portland has been designed to be as energy efficient as possible.

At least 10% of Portland Marina’s energy will be generated from renewable sources, in the form of three wind turbines directly linked to the marina’s power supply. The marina buildings have also been designed to be extremely energy efficient, with very high standards of insulation.

The marina itself will be illuminated by low-energy LED lighting and to encourage sustainable travel there will be bicycle racks available – Portland Marina is linked to Weymouth town centre by a flat cycle path.
